Fun Fact on Scottish Law
The Scottish legal system is unique in having three possible verdicts: “guilty”, “not guilty” and “not proven”. The last two each result in acquittal without retrial: the difference is that not proven means that while the judge and jury didn’t find sufficient evidence for indictment, they’re not entirely convinced of the defendant’s innocence either. Also, in Scottish law, arson is called “willful fire-raising,” while manslaughter is “culpable homicide.”
